LAKE BALATON

Hotels around Lake Balaton

Plattensee Balaton hotelsThe lake itself is the largest in Europe, stretching for almost 80km and varying in width from 14km to 1.5km (at the point where it's almost cut in two by the Tihany peninsula). With an average depth of only three meters, it warms up quickly and maintains a pleasant temperature from May to October. In winter the lake often freezes over (the ice growing as thick as 25cm) and horse-drawn carts can be seen driving across.

Though its history is hardly writ large, the region was first settled in the Iron Age, and has been a wine-growing centre since Roman times. During the sixteenth century, it formed the front line between Turkish and Habsburg-ruled Hungary, with an Ottoman fleet based at Siófok and an Austrian one at Balatonfüred. Spas and villas appeared from 1765 onwards, but catered largely to the wealthy until the Communists began promoting holidays for the masses after World War II. During the Sixties, footloose youths started flocking to the Balcsi (Balaton's familiar nickname), while the Seventies and Eighties witnessed a boom in private holiday homes and room letting, fuelled by an influx of tourists from Germany and Austria.

Transportation

Though all the main resorts are accessible by rail from Budapest or Székesfehérvár, it's worth knowing that the so-called Balaton Express is actually a slow train, stopping everywhere as it circles the lake. Such trains are the easiest way of traveling along the southern shore, and between Balatonalmádi and Badacsony on the opposite bank, whereas buses are better for journeys between Balatonfüred and Tihany, Badacsony and Keszthely, and Veszprém and Siófok.

Car or minibus transfer to Lake Balaton

Lake Balaton accommodationFrom mid-April to late September or mid-October, fairly regular passenger ferries zigzag from Siofok to Balatonfüred on the other bank, then west to Tihany-rév and back across the lake to Balatonföldvár. During July and August, another service runs the length of the lake from Balatonkenese to Keszthely (5hr), making regular stops on both banks en route. Additionally, car ferries ply between Tihany-rév and Szántódrév (April-Nov), Révfülöp and Balatonboglár, and Badacsony and Fonyód (both mid-April to mid-Oct).
It's well worth visiting the Heviz Thermal Lake as well.
